the day, it came crashing down
Well if i am not unlucky enough to suffer a big fall (feet is still hurting), I accidentally broke my glasses too... so now unless I am wearing my contacts, everyone looks beautiful! Everyone said that I am sooo unlucky but there's something unbelievable that happened! Something people will either say I am super lucky or super unlucky.

I was sleeping blissfully at 540am in the morning, suddenly there was a LOUD bang on the floor that almost made me jump from the bed. Everything looks clam and in place, so I sat on the bed wondering what was that sound... yes.. i was in shock.. then i saw this white thingy glistering on the floor... it was the plastic casing of my ceiling light. Never in the world will i expect something like that to drop on an early friday morning. As there is nothing I can do, I just picked up the cover, put it on the empty bed and go back to sleep.. yesh.. i slpt peacefullly.

well... i feel that I am lucky as the chances of the casing hitting me is rather big as my room ain v big but as I was lying on the bed, it missed me by inches... but some till think that i am just plain unlucky....

Goin to collect my clothes n put it in the dryer.. ohh.. pls let the sun stay up.. need it to dry my clothes.. not enough coins to put everything in the dryer

my foot is hurting!
ohh... my right foot is hurting now... I injured the lower part of my feet! okies this was how it all started.

My roomie asked me if i want to join her n her friends for some art film- A Day Without Mexicans. I was game for it as it's boring staying in on a Tuesday nite.. esp when I am in my room all day! We came up the wrong exit at Central thus having to take a long walk to the place. The movie is screened at some pub that's very nice, think I might just go back there some day.

The show's concept was great but the filming is a little slipshod, but in any case I enjoyed myself. After that, some guy working at the building told us that there is a rather nice Jazz bar ard the corner so we started our journey there... n he was right! Its a very nice place call Gecko. Love the owner's dog that is running all over the place. Didnt take a pict of the place, but just my roomie n some of the other xchange guys who went.

mmm... after that we left the place in search for food.. so we ended up at 7-11! The 2 guys working there were very nice and funny, kept joking with us, think they were jus plain bored. I gotten myself a pizza but shared it with Vicky (she is a vegetarian who was just soo hungry that she ignored the fact there was meat) and gave my roomie the crust as she is a vegetarian too (a strict one that only wants to eat the crust). Then we wandered for a long time... searching for somewhere nice... it was during this wandering that i missed a step on some cobbled floor and injured my foot! Had some scratches on my shin too. NO i am not drunk, didn't even drink that much.., i was jus plain clumsy.. as usual!

Some of us decided to come back early as got tired of wandering, so 5 persons took the cab back. It was no joke squeezing at the back with 3 other UK-ians as they are not very petite by nature and my roomie joked about me having to suffer. When we got back to the hostel, Matt, Daisy and me were a little hungry so off we went in search of another 7-11 but we found someting better!! Aftter getting some instructions from Adrian (nuqin's hk fren) we walked down some weird lane where there are supposedly food n drinks.. that's is where we stumbled upon some ktv place! Its soo local I guess, and we were the youngest there.. but it was soooooo fun! The fried rice there was the best I ever tasted in HK so far and the staff were v friendly. So we sang, eat and drink... living up the life of exchange students!

Okies thats a pict of Matt and Daisy singing but guess it's too dark to see a thing! Anyway, after the food we took a slow walk back. By this time, my feet starts to hurt and the route back is a up slope! Matt offered to piggyback me upslope but I declined as he ain very big in build and I am not light either, moreover it was upslope! So I hobbled slowly back. How I wish Rujin was here instead....

Goin to do my hmwork n get ready for class....

CHina Eastern
Back from Shanghai!!! The weather is simply great over there, enjoyed myself... n as usually there are some negative pointst too... BUT its too late.. will give a detailed but that can wait as I need to sleep soon. There is something that I have to write... something that I cannot wait.. my exprience with China Eastern Airline and Shanghai Airport.

On Thursday morning, I dragged myself out of bed, hurried to the airport early in the morning only to realise that.. the flight is CANCELLED!!! We have to wait for more than an hr to board another plane. My gosh.. that is an extra hour of precious bedtime! When we finally got on the plane, I was kinda disappointed... the tix ain cheap and it didn't live up to my expectations. The food wasn't good too but all my unhappiness disappeared when I arrived in China because the weather is prefect for travelling!

Sunday evening, was rushed to the airport as the traffic condition in Shanghai is rather unpredictable and we do not want to be caught in a jam. In fact, we were tooooo early... soooo early that we just stoned away. The 3 of us (Eddy, Sheena and myself) being the obedient Singaporeans followed the instructions on the boarding pass. It stated flight time is 2000, Gate 25.. thus we journeyed (long long walk) to Gate 25 and waited patiently. However, at 1930, we got a little suspicious as the boarding area seems pretty empty and there was no plane in sight so we decided to check the board that states all the timing etc etc.. it was then we realised that it has been changed to Gate 15! There was no announcement over the PA system about the change and its not that they do not use the PA system as there were plenty of announcements. So we hurried to Gate 15! However, 10 mins before 8pm, there was an announcement that totally dampered my mood................................... plane will be delayed for an hour! By then, we were hungry and tired, and personally I was sick of the airport lights as it was giving me a headache! More suitable for a stadium.

We found good seats for waiting and barely 5 mins after settling down, there was another announcement.... it has been changed to Gate 14! Arrgh.. more walking.. more waiting...

Finally 9pm! I was waiting and hoping for the announcement to inform us that we can board. 5 mins passed... nothing! 10 mins passed.... still nothing! so eddy stood by the window to look and the plane was still loading food and other goods! My gosh.. i almost fainted. Finally at about 920pm, we boarded the plane and the plane wasn't soaring in the skyt till almost 10pm.

In the end, we missed the bus E22 back to Kowloon Tong so we took another bus A21. We intended to stop at Ching Yi but stopped at Meifoo instead. Took the cab back and thankfully it costed only HK 40. Finally arrived at the hostel at about 130am.

I need efficiency! Guess the plane wasn't ready and the typhoon signal 3 in HK isn't helping much.

Oh yah.. on the way to Shanghai.. do not know if its the Hk side or Shanghai side broked the elastic band on the top of my bag. Thankfully its not important!!!

I am going to find Master Chow (Zhou Gong) now

Requirements for Sheena's future husband
Oh yah.. Eddy and me promised to do a little write up on Sheena. He is going to write what he learnt about Sheena in the 3 wks we are here and I am going to write the neccessary requirements her future husband must meet.. here goes:

1) must be willing to wash and iron clothes. This includes sunning them and doing the laundry on regular basis. (ps: this includes all the other household chores too)

2) must know how to cook. Not just instant noodles and eggs as she can do those too. The more exotic, the better.

3) Have patience. Not just ordinary dose of patience but plenty! As Sheena has indicated that she is someone that is very indecisive so she needs plenty of time. If you are always in a rush, sorry you do not qualify.

4) She likes men to be decisive. If you are haw-ish by nature, sorry u will just piss her off.

5) However, the future husband cannot make all the decisions, she likes to make some too. No, it doesn't contradict with the pt mentioned above.

6) Please do not expect her to read the newspaper. She will most glad if you read it to her. Want to know the reason why, ask her.

7) If you are messy, dirty or hate to bathe, sorry you do not qualify too! This means there cannot be hair everywhere, must bathe twice a day and do not wear shoes while driving her car.

8) Women are all suckers for pain, Sheena is no exception. So please must know how to play the 'fishing' game. Want to know what it means, ask moi!

9) Oh she loves guys who can blow her away intellectually. No it doesnt mean that having a 1st class honour will do, it means saying things that will make her go "wow... I didn't know that". Eddy once commented that this is not a difficult condition (sheena go kill him k). However, those guys that do not read.. u need not apply.

10) She needs constant love and attention. Although being financially stable is impt, someone that spends 14hrs a day working is not suitable. Gals like guys to do little sweet things for them so if you are a not romantic in nature, sorry Sheena will not like you.

Actually I can think of tons more, but think these are among the most important. Guys if you do not meet any requirements, or think that its too tough, I am sorry to tell you not to waste Sheena's time.

OKies, completed my task. Now I am going to take a nap and enjoy the wonderful "typhoon signal 1" weather.

lanma island
My gosh... I am getting so many rubbish comments.. weird people asking me to go see their site etc.. is there some competition going on? Like the most no of hits a site gets the bigger the price.. Does anyone knows how I can stop this?

Okies lets get back to life in HK:

Yesterday, Eddy, Sheena and myself went to Lanma Island (in case u don't know, its an outlying island of HK and was showcased in many HK drama/movies). We decided to go because on Friday, Sheena said that we should go for a hike as she is putting on wt! Initially, Eddy and me were kinda of surpised that Sheena wants to go for a hike, its not very like her to suggest that, so being the nice friends of cos we have to go... We even decided to have a picnic on the beach at Lanma island.

When we 1st got there.. the weather was pretty good, it was windy, not very sunny. Moreover, the air there is so fresh! A nice break from the city air that I breathe all the time. However, good things are not meant to last! It was barely 15 mins after we arrived, it started to rain. I do not mean the light showers, it was pouring! Initially, we seeked shelter at this food stall and we happily eating our beancurd, but soon the food stall proved to be a lousy shelter as I gotten pretty wet just sitting. My Birken were soaked and were rather mushy thus making it hard to walk.. so I wanted to get a cheap flip flop but the sad thing is... all the cheap flipflops are sooo small!!!! My feet arent that big rite? Finally, I found a shop that seems to sell bigger flipflop (and shelter from the rain) however, the shop only sells havaianas! so after trying on tons of color, I finally settled for a bluish-lavender one. Its not exactly cheap but guess I didnt have much choice then. Well, don't mind shelling out more for a good pair of flipflops that will last longer and more comfy since I am doing alot of walking in HK.

Finally, the rain subsided and we make our way to the beach but as usually, good things don't last! It started pouring again.. n there was some annoucement in muffied cantonese/mandarin/ english that sounded so serious, which we later found out what it meant. Simply "please get out of the water as its unsafe to swim in the storm". As soon as its more suitable to walk, we made our way back to the jetty area where there are many eateries suitable for us to grab a bite and take shelter as we wait for the next next ferry. We found a place known as the Bookworm cafe. It is such a warm, cosy place that I can just sit there all day and watch the world go by. The food is great but drinks are so so only. The place was so comfy that we decided to forgo the 430 ferry and wait for the next one.

Anyway, in Hk there are Mid-Autumn festival is a BIG thing. Its so BIG that there will be no classes tomorrow. I love the lanterns here but its so expensive! My favourite is the butterfly one (think only Sheena and eddy knows what am I talking about).

ohh.. one more thing! Sheena intro me to Maxim's almond fingers and they tasted soo good.. will buy back some for u guys back in sg!

my long whine
Just came back from a 1 hr chat with Janice... we were sitting along her corridoor n my gosh.. everyone stared!

So excited today as I finally booked my flights to Shanghai and Taipei, although I must admit that getting the tix isn't a very easy task as I have to compare prices, timing, duration etc etc.. this includes those that are posted online and in the classified. Initially I found a tix for Shanghai that is not only cheap but timing is highly suitable too but it has been fully booked hence we were left with only the expensive ones. Guess its okies, guess have to scrimp on other areas... sorry guys.. no pressies from me!

Well.. guess that many will suggest that I cook myself but frankly groceries here aint cheap and in fact just buying the stuff I need to cook a meal here may cost more than eating out. But I am determined to cook more often as I need to save up more in order to be more liquid while travelling. Wonder how the other exchange students survive... there are some that clubs and drink every day.. travel every now n then.. eat out all the time! Ohh.. talking about food, today, Eddy, Sheena and me discovered a very cheap place to eat! All the noodles there cost HK$10 and drinks are not more than HK$7. This is the cheapest thing that I ever had in HK so far... and its actually not bad.. jus that the soup is too salty! Think I cannot take this too often if not my hair will just all drop off or I will be seriously dehydrated. Frankly, Macs and KFC are actually one of the most affordable places to eat in HK, moreover there are more variety.. much much more than SG. Mmm.. other affordable places that we have been frequenting are Cafe de Coral (aka Da Jia Le), the school canteen and our hostel cafeteria.

A little lazy to blog.. so lets do it quick:

1) went clubbing on wed and the waitress was soo rude! nv goin back there again.. feel like slappin her inside out, left right centre... acts as if we have no $ to pay.

2) Sheena bought her 1st backpack today! Eddy and me will be carrying backpak for the holis so she thought she should get one too. So gotta teach her backpak packing 101 soon!

3) My water heater is killing me.. its either too hot or too cool.. so in the end always bathe in cold water... soo sick of it! The hot water is simply too hot!!! so unless i want to have red, burnt skin after every bath.. its a strict no no. I don't mind bathing cold water but it will be nice to have some warm water at times...

4) Bought another set of papers today. I am someone that needs to read, I do not like being some frog in the well.. such that after 4 mths of exchange, I will feel soo lost with what the rest of the world. It is bad enough not to watch tv... thus I need the papers. However, the newspapers here is more expensive than SG... miss the affordable and interesting Straits Times!
Another reason why I am getting newspapers is because its one of the easiest way to pass time! I suddenly have alot of free time here... I do not like not having something to do! Something is wrong with me man.

5) Need to find someting more constructive to do as life here is getting boring.. any suggestions?

6) Stupid exchange forum.. we are due to present the following wk! Suppose to present on SG but what can we do... arrgh.. y do they have to do this to us....

aiyah enough of whinning.. going to read my papers...

shenzhen, french movies and shrinkin clothes
Okies.. I feel bad!!! Been procastinating for a few days, so finally decided that this shall not go on anymore! I am going to finish reading my blog before I sleep.

A recap:

Saturday (10/09/2005)

I couldn't sleep for the longest of time till about 645am, but the shitty thing is I am meeting the gals at 830! so that leaves me with barely an hr of slp b4 I have to get ready. The good thing is that I had a very interesting conversation with my roomie, conversations with her is always interesting when she is half-drunk! Anyway, met the gals and we made our way to the KCR station however, we didnt depart for Shenzhen till almost an hour later as Eddy was late!!! The MTR had a slight glitch hence we 4 gals waited n waited an waited.

The ride to Luo Wu is only about 30-40 mins n its my chance to get a cat nap but the surroundings proved to be more interesting... esp when the train was at the Fen Ling station! I been hearing the name "fen ling" for a long time as that's where Tian fu from Zhen Qing stays.. one of these days I am planning to drop by that area and look around.

When we reached Shenzhen, Sheena's dad's agent sent one of his employee, Thomas to welcome us and was glad to have him around because with Eddy's Uncle Louise, they were very good hosts and 'body guards'. Thus we embarked on our journey of shopping n shopping and more shopping!

Shoes and accessories seemed to be our main agenda as those are the things we got. Sheena bought the most, and I got the least. I only got 2 pairs of shoes, 2 earrings, 2 necklances and 1 dvd.

Sssh... I know the dvd is pirated so0o... sshhh!!! Anyway, after the many hours of shopping, Thomas brought us to this place that sells fantastic crabs!!!! They were being cooked in a Sichuan way, thus its spicy and salty and the same time.. the tot of it is making me drool... later we went to the KTV next door and my gosh... my jaw dropped! The receptionist, lady operating the elevator and standing at the door welcoming us are all in blue gowns. I really mean gowns! They even have a blue chiffon-looking shawl. Later when we took the lift to the 2nd floor, 2 rows of gals in gold gowns welcomed us with wide smiles and 1 of the gal followed us to our room. Initally, Sheena thought that they are call girls but later we realised that they are actually waitress cum DJ, so they will ensure that our drinks are topped up and dedicate the songs we want to sing. It was pretty wow exprience, which was heightened! we were actually come in face of a RMB 200 a nite call gal. Felt sad for her as I think no gal will want to sell herself, moreover for someting so little, wonder what drove her to that.

After that exhilarating exprience, the driver drove us to Uncle Louise's house, where the 5 of us packed into a room, taking silly pictures of our buys.

Sunday (11/09/2005)

Woke up to Eddy's alarm! He was rather smart to leave the room while his alarm was blasting away as it forces at least 1 of us to get up to off it and that sacrificial lamb is.... Janice! I just laid on my mattress and smiled at her, while both of us where cursing away! However, the wonderful breakfast made up for the early disturbance! Soon we were out of the house and on the way to Shi Jie Zi Chuan (Window of the world) , where wonders of the world are downsized. We were bluffed! Uncle Louise told us that it will take about 10mins to walk from his place to the train station but it took more than 30mins! By the time we got to the station, we were all tired and perspiring. Window of the World is big! The place covered an enormous area, and while Uncle Louise predicted that we will take 5 hours to finished it, we left the place within 2 hrs.

That is a picture of us with Buckingham Palace, but opps.. we covered the entire palace! Actually, its not allowed to step into or climb on the buildings but we decided to heck it as its not nice taking pictures while standing a few metres from the buildings!

After that, we headed back to Uncle Louise's house. Rubee, Janice and me waited at the station for more than an hr, while Sheena and Eddy went back to collect our stuff. I almost fell asleep while waitin and 3 Station guards came to ask us what were we doing. By the time the 3rd guard came, I was sooo paiseh!

We went to this place for lunch where its famous for its beef balls. Its really good!!!! Brought some back to HK where we will cook them soon...

Later we went Luo Wu shopping and sadly, its not as good as DongMen. Perhaps cos most of the vendors refused to give us good price and they were soooo fierce! We even witnessed a gang fight, after which we left the place in a haste and made our way back to HK.

Monday (12/09/2005)

Both classes went well but I was so sleepy that I find myself nodding off and I was so glad when the IS class ended. The 5 of us made our way to Wellcom Supermarket, where we decided to cook on tuesday! Got all the stuff we need and made our way back to our hostel. It was fun preparing the food. Made meat dumplings and meat balls, after which, Sheena was hungry so Rubee fried the rest of the meat with eggs and after which we had toast! I bought a pack of 6 bread and the toast finished most of it. It tasted really good with jam. A picture of our dirty dirty hands!

Tuesday (13/09/2005)

Woke up late thus didnt get a chance to do my laundry!!! Had lunch in sch with the rest then we made our way to Festival Walk where we found out that Kiehl's body lotion is ohh soo good! Think I will go get it when I am done with the one I have. After getting the durians and ketchup, Rubee, Eddy and me went back to start cooking while Janice and Sheena attended class. Our food really tasted pretty good!! yum yum.. homecooked food for the 1st time in Hk.. Oh how much I love it. Sheena's roomie, Timmy came to join us too...

After that, I had to go to my Residence Mistress room for a little gathering with other exchange students. Met some really nice people among which my fav is Alsa but sadly she will be here only for 2 wks! After that, Martin and his french fren (cannot remember her name) invited me to join some other exchange students for a movie session... when along as I thought it will be a great chance to meet more people. The movie was dumb though. I am one of those that stayed till the end and my gosh... its a total waste of time!!!

Now I am back in my room bloggin away... feelin slpy so going to bed. My roomie has left for Philippines, so hae the room all to myself for 6 nitez! yuppies!!!!! but think will miss her too.. always nice to tok to her. Oh yah, heard someone trying to open my door so felt puzzled as Daisy should be at Philippines already, then there was a knock, I went to open and it was this guy who gotten the wrong room! His face was in total shocked then embarassment, I couldn't help but laugh... ohh i am so evil!

Okies thats a quick recap of what helping, not very interesting or funny.. but whatever..... my bed is calling me! Just hope that my clothes will not shrink anymore from the dryer tomorrow!

arrgh... i was typing!
Arggh!!! Think I must be sleepy... Dont know what did I do but the previous entry was published when I was typing.

Anyway, Sheena n me decided to take bus 206 as its supposed to be Stanley Express, so we will reach Stanley Mkt in 20 mins but it was a rather bumpish ride.. such that Sheena almost puked! Ohh.. I am sooo tempted to put the pict that I took of Sheena's shoes but think she will kill me if I do so...just jus say that its sooo interesting that she will never wear her shoes that way in Sg. Oh by the way, the shoes killed her so much that she bought a flip flop to wear... haha.. she had much trouble wearing flip flops as its not very her to wear something less than 1 inch.

The place is actually very touristy but I enjoyed the enviroment very much as its peaceful, clean and beautiful. Some pictures that I took of the surroundings:

A tourist approached us to help him take a photo and after a small chat we found out that he is an American who is visiting his friend in HK. While I think that it will be nice to travel alone, as I can go anywhere I want, do anything I want, but guess that it will get a little boring too as there is no one to share interesting sights with, no one to help me take photos. However, I am not eliminating the fact that someday I might just decide to travel alone, just for the exprience.

After Stanley, we took 973 to Tsimshatsui East and its another long ride.. more than an hr!!! Gotten a slight headache when we got off as the road wasn't exactly flat n smooth... so miss Sg roads! Oh, as the bus passed by Pokfulam Rd, I saw the University of HK, its exactly what someone told me before... "must climb mountain". The place is very hilly and its seems to be difficult to get around, suddenly Kowloon Tong seems so accessible. Think one will never be satisfied until one sees how bad other situations are. So glad I never choose CityU.

Told my mum about my future, tentative travel plans and she kept reminding me to spend less and study more, but I am not a compulsive shopper, haven't been buying alot and planning to keep my money to travel. Moreover, the school seems so slack that I suddenly feel that Sg students are studying too hard. Rigan agreed with me because when he was at UPenn, he felt the same way too! So the Ministry of Education in Sg, pls do something about it... cos felt that studying has erroded most of my youth! When people go on exchange, isn't it the time to travel and explore the host country and it neighbours? One do not always get the opportunity to do that.

Decided to cut down on my spending, as I have to pay my hostel bill soon and I really do want to be more liquid when I travel.

Okies.. my bags are packed and I am ready to go to bed as need to get up early. Shen Zhen here I come!

Don't know is it me or HK... but the air here makes me feel sleepy! In Singapore, I usually sleeps about 6 hrs a day but here I can just go on n on n on.. apparently I am not the only one.. my roomie too! We both find it amusing..

Today, Sheena and me when to Stanley Mkt and it takes a rather long time to get there... 1st we have to take the MTR to Central, then cross over to the Bus Interchange where we can take either 6, 6X, 66 OR 206. While crossing the overhead bridge, we walked right into the set of some drama serial and I recognised the actress! Was so excited and took a photo, but the sad thing is I do not know her name! She is very pretty in person, tall and slim (actually, its skinny), with fair porcelain skin.

After that,

Talking rubbish
Firstly I want to clarify!!!! In the previous blog entry, I said something about speaking better English than the Hongkongers... I do not really meant that statement word for word.. I actually wanted to say that when I open my mouth to speak.. I will instinctively speak in English thus unlike the locals and mainlanders. Feel so paiseh after I re-read what I wrote... didn't meant it!!!

Anyway, had an interesting class today.. interesting because the Prof has quite an eager beaver character and it allows me to understand more about how one behave in a scientific way. However, I was rather sleepy so half the time I kinda stared at the prof blankly.. luckily I proof myself to be a rather good student as I was able to see this box in 2 ways n know whats a Gladiator Wahahaha.. think only Sheena will be able to understand the joke.

Discovered that Hongkong shops are very willing to give BIG discount as its pretty common to see things like 60% off... even like 90% off! Think they are trying to clear stock as the Fall/Winter clothes are going to be out soon... Time to shop shop shop but not enough $$$$.. anyone care to spare me some?

Haiz basically its a long day... very lazy to write anymore.. going to get back to Narnia!

Language problem!
Today was the first time that I go somewhere in HK alone! I was trying to find the post office and decided to go there myself as don't need company for something so trival. Anyway, following the instructions of a very nice local student, I managed to find the post office at Fa Po Street. It was nice walking through the residential area, known as Yau Yat Tsuen, seeing the kids, maids, aunties doing their own thing is quite a saccharine feeling. However, I must admit that its not exactly very near school so thankfully the weather made it easy. But as I walked down the street of Fa Po Street, I realised the contrast living standards of the neighbourhoods surrounding CityU. One on hand, Yau Yat Tsuen is the supposedly a high-class residential area like Bt Timah, where the Filippino maids are busying sheltering the young kids from the sun, where Mercedees and Jaguars are a common sight. However, Nan Shan Tsuen on the other side is a public housing area where the blocks are generally older and un-glam. It the wet market is, where you'll find old uncles wearing singlets and chatting with their fellow neighbours and where most do not own a car, much less a Jaguar. What a stark difference! Wonder what the 2 contrasting group of people feels about the other group.

Anyway back to the post office, its soooo small that one can easily overlooked it! There is like only 2 men in the post office, 1 in the back office and 1 at the front desk. A very idllyic looking place, with the wooden-framed doors, high wooden counter that has a whitish marble top, clear glass-pane and certain slabs are stained green. The surrounding area is also pretty cool.. there is a 7-11, wellcome supermarket, few housing companies, a hair saloon, a clinic that is undergoing renovation and a beauty school whose signage is very obvious but the entrance is missing. Think I will take a walk there soon...

Okies.. in term so of my lessons for the day.. they r rather interesting. Firstly, its Japanese culture and the lecturer was absent as he has to go for an overseas conference so his research assistant came in place to explain the course syllabus and requirements. He did it all in Cantonese so I can only stared at him while my nice classmate, Po, translated for me. Irritating guy.. told him that I do not understand Cantonese yet so still went on! He said that he will get back to me but he didnt.. I had to approach him to clarify with him. Okies, him aside (didnt even catch his name), my lecturer is Dr Wang Xiaolin, a Mainlander who went to Japan to study since he was a kid. Initially, I thought that Dr Wang is a female but luckily my classmate told me that Dr Wang is actuallly a male! Luckily, I didnt send him any email yet as it will most likely goes "Dear Mdm...". According to the research asst, the lecturer prefers to conduct his classes in Putonghua and for our group report and presentation we must do it either in English or Chinese, preferably in Chinese. My jaw literally dropped to the table! I love to watch Chinese drama, sing Chinese songs and all.... listening to him teach in Chinese is no prob BUT doing a report in Chinese! My gosh.. the last time I really write anything in Chinese was for my A-level, 4 years ago.. n even then it sux big time! Guess Zi xuan (my JC chinese teacher) is laughing her head off now... as those who didnt pay attention then, like moi, only live to regret it now. Anyway, this Mainlander asked me if I want to do project with him, I told him frankly that my chinese is horrible and I will prefer to do my report in English, he said its okie, he will help me. I only smiled at him.. speechless! Guess the reason why he wanted to be in the same group as me is because we both learnt the simplifed Chinese, whereas the rest of the class are local thus learnt the other form of Chinese, so by being in the same group as me, he will get to submit a Chinese report. Was thinking of doing this course just for interest so will not drop it. I should just be glad that the lecturer isnt going to ramble off in Cantonese............. is anyone coming to HK soon? I need my Chinese dictionary!

Next class was Thai language I. The lecturer is nice and can speak quite a bit of Chinese and Cantonese but when lesson proper started, I almost slipped off my chair. There are 44 consonants, 21 vowels, 32 sounds and 5 tone in the Thai langauge... and they all sound the same! Furthermore, we are expected to learn to write the Thai language which are derieved from Sanskrit.... which means they look like Indian words... err.. don't make sense to me at all as unlike Chinese words where every character as some meaning.. Thai at a glance just seems like a very compliated drawing. Showed Daisy (my roomie) my book... she just went "WHAT!!!! how is one going to learn all this in 1 term!" A little regret not bringing my iriver to record what the lecturer is saying but do I regret taking that course.. not yet.. cos it will be good to effective bargain in Thailand! Muahahaha!!! Now going to start looking for some Thai friends, as I know I definitely need help.

Being a non-Cantonese speaking Singaporean in HK, I feel half-chinese and half-ang mo. Do not know why but the locals and Mainlander makes me feel less a Chinese than them because I am better in my English and I do not understand Cantonese very well. However, I am not as Ang Mos as those from Europe, Australia and USA because when I am with them, I feel very ching chong fan... was telling Sheena that and she felt the same where too.. we seem to be a halfway point where we are stuck between East and West.

Went up to Sheena's room to check out her havoc roomie but she wasnt around, kinda disappointed but she has many interesting things lying around.... so just peered through a little. mmm... taught Sheena how to sew a button... my mum should be proud of me man.. I did a pretty good job!

okies its late now.. time to go.. last class for the week tomorrow!

too much tot into small things
The weather still seems a little gloomy today but its fine with me as long it doesn't start to pour!

My room is just opposite a constuction site so every time I stand by the window, I see tons of workers buzzing around the site but earlier when I was by the window the site is totally empty! I was really puzzled and tried to find an explanation for it... I know that they have to be a work as it's not a Sunday so could there be a generally meeting..or the developer went bankrupt.. a strike.. However, within an hour I realised that workers were hard at work again.. then I suddenly laughed at myself.. why did I give so much thought to something so easy - they were having their lunch break! Guess that initially I had the impression that its early in the morning but I am so wrong because it was already 1230 when I rose from my nice, comfortable bed!

I finally applied the nail enamel/varnish/polish that I bought a few days back. Always did not have the opportunity to use it as I didn't want to stink up the room when my roomie is in or my short-term memory will fail me such that I will be busy doing rubbish while the pretty color sits in its pretty bottle on my pretty shelf. Anyway, I finally applied it! But after I started painting my 1st toe... I went "aiyoh!!!" and shook my head.. tsk tsk!!! I didn't have base coat, top coat, nail file, nail polish remover!!!! If anything goes wrong while I am painting I will be in deep shit as I am not able to remove it... so I with great concentration and precision I painted my toes... nail by nail.. Wanted to take a picture as I am writing this entry but camera's batt is flat! sooo too bad..

Okies gotta get ready to go out.. 1st stop post office then sch!!

what a restless day!
Been here for 10 days... n today is the most boring day so far! Today I mean Tuesday. I had no classes today and had nothing planned so in the end I just idled away. Lets see what I did... woke up near to 11, chatted on the phone, had lunch, did my laundry, watched tv, surf around, read my new book, fell asleep, had dinner, watched more tv, surf around, talked to roomie, had 1st level gathering, back here!

Basically, its a boring day and for someone that is not used to slacking, its totally torturous. I like having time to myself but there this is really bad. Guess Jin is right, I am too goal-oriented, I need to know what am I supposed to do, where am I heading... is that something bad? Hopefully tomorrow be better, I have classes in the afternoon and nite, so guess in the morning I can just clear my stuff or something cos my room is soo messy now! Guess my roomie and me are not clean freaks! Thank goodness for that as I do not really want someone that is grumpy or grouchy just because there is hair on the floor.

I am having problems sleeping, or at least sleeping at the right time. I do not know why. It's definitely not jet-lag as Singapore and Hongkong is the same time... help!!! This cannot do!!! I have morning class on Thursday. Any brillant solution?

Started reading my new novel- The Chronicles of Narnia. Ok fine.. i know that its not a very sophiscated or thought-provoking book but I will definitely enjoy it. Has the movie been realised?

Listerning to Gigi Leung now, and she has a new song that is actually rather nice. Its call "顺时针". I'm a sucker for sad songs esp sad Chinese songs as it seems to be able to bring sad songs to another level. Its easier to relate, perhaps as they seem to tell a story, able to explain more. Many may not agree with me but I someone that definitely will! ;)

No photos today.. nothing much to take.

I miss Singapore food.. miss the spices! If anyone is to ask me what is good about Sg, think my 1st ans will be.. THE FOOD!

When I was younger, my dad told me that friends come and go.. at different point in time we will meet different people, and for various reasons, we will lose some too. I guess its true.. thinking back, I got to know many wonderful people but lost them along the way... and I always do wonder what are they doing now, are things going well for them, do they still remember me. These questions may never get answered as I may never get a chance to bump into them again. Recently, I realised that I lost a very good friend for good.. at least i considered him as a good friend of mine. However, I still do not know the reason why we are no longer talking... guessed over time, each got busy doing their own stuff and fade out from the life of the other. Initially I was a little upset but guess that its all part of life. Perhaps someday we will bump into each other again, perhaps someday we will pick up the phone to call the other person, perhaps perhaps perhaps. Don't worry I am just in my thinking mood today... too much free time!

Time to go back to my book.. hopefully when I get up.. I will tons to do.. hate being restless! This is how I looked today.... frowning and sad (was that bored and restless!)

Anyway, yes.. I have short hair now but this is actually one of my favourite msn pict... my sis is using it as her msn pict now.. copy cat!

1st day of school
First day of school!!!!

Now still kind of sleepy as I slpt rather late but our dear Sheena disturbed my nice dream by calling my room. Seems like she has been waking me up quite often.

Anyway, yesterday at the mooncake thingy I saw the actor who acted the uncle in Jie Da Huan Xi. He looks much much slimmer n better in person, dunno his name though.

Now Rubee and Janice are a little much tanner cos of the Lantau Island trip... think they are sun-tanning on their roof now. I still look pretty much the same and we all agreed that thankfully Sheena never go cos she will not enjoy the walk and the sun.

OKies... time to shower and go for my first class... Hong Kong Legal System *yucks*

long long day
Saturday (03/09/2005)

On Saturday, I went for the Lantau Island tour organised by City U and my gosh.. it had alot of walkin!!! I do not mind the walking but the lack of sleep and hot weather didn't make it easy.

As I woke up late, I was in a rush thus forgot about the water and biscuits that I intended to bring... was soooo hungry and thirsty!!! Thankfully, Eddy being the friend, bodyguard, nanny, entertainer, shared his water with me.. if not think I will be totally dehydrated like some salted fish in Tai O. Anyway 1st stop was Po Lam Monastry and the Big Buddha.

Po Lam Monastry and the Big Buddha

The bus ride here is like 1hr 45 mins.. soo long, soo many winding road and sooo cramp! Cannot explain my relief when we finally arrived but then we have to conquer this long flight of stairs to reach the top. This is the start of my endless walking for the day.
This is a picture of the Big Buddha.. think some might seen it in movies or HK's tourism promotion materials.

However, the climb was worth it cause of the wonderful view! Wanted to upload a picture showing all 4 of us (Rubee, Janice, Eddy and me) but its all in Eddy's camera as he brought a tripod for the day!!! We better start exchanging pictures soon.

Tai O

I don't know if anyone can remember that many years ago there was a TVB drama serial that featured this place. It starred Chen Song Ling and her family makes shrimp paste. Anyway, that is not important, what is important is that the place has a old rustic charm is that unique. However, its too far from the city. For many who do not know, Tai O is actually an old fishing village where many native products can be found. ohh.. there are big dogs everywhere too... I mean BIG!!

We had vegetarian lunch at this place that was supposedly be the best eating place in Tai O. Even though the place looks rundown but I must admit the food is good! I am not a big fan of vegetarian food but I enjoyed it very much. Our table was mainly Chinese, the 4 of us from Sg, 4 from Mainland China, 2 from Holland and 2 of the student helpers. The Singaporeans are busy eating and eating... non-stop, such that when the rest of them stopped, our chopsticks are still busy moving. We were joking about being Merlions during the boat ride later as I ate soo much! However, as Janice had motion-sickness pills, we had no-worries!

After lunch, we headed for the village where there was a camera crew waiting for us. They are making a documentary about the area and decided to tag along with us. The reason for the documentary is because the government wants to develop the area into modern tourist attraction like Sentosa but the villagers are not happy about it, so Pearl station hopes to film the place and interview some of us on our views on it. Rubee and Janice were being interviewed! There are still many houses that are built on stilts. However, their walls are metal instead of wood or bricks as a few years back there was a fire that burnt down the entire area.

We made our way to Yeung Hau Temple where I recognised it to be one of the favourite location for drama serial!! According to the handout, the temple honors Hau Wong a loyal court official in the late Sung Dynasty.

After the temple, we started climbing this rather tall hill to see a stone Obelisk that used to mark the water boundary between HongKong and Mainland China. It was erected in !902. The view was great just that there were many grumbles during the climb as there was nothing there exactly the Obelisk and it wasn't an easy climb as the plants where overgrowing thus covering the steps and the weather was just scorching! Anyway this is the stone:

Anyway, one of the exchange student (who is very pretty by the way) has a prosthetic leg but she seems to enjoy the climb very much as I overheard her conversation with this other guy. He asked her if she did the climb and she had this wide smile when she said she did and enjoyed it very much. At that moment I felt guilty for whinning about the climb as it was so much harder for her to do it yet she did it with much enthusiasm and is able to derive joy from it.

After descending from the hill, we headed for a museums in the village where there were many old stuff were displayed. The local used them in the past and many were actually used in fishing. There was a very friendly lady in the museum and after talking to her, I found out that she has been living in the village for the past 50 years after moving there when she was a baby. There were 2 books on sale and they were actually written by her. The record the life and traditions of the people of Tai O since the 1960s and have many interesting pictures. I kind of regret not getting a book as I think that it will be an interesting and enriching read. Moreover, it will help fund the musuem. What is amazing about this woman is that she only has Secondary 3 education yet is able to write not 1 but 2 books about Tai O. She is a housewife, mother of 2 boys and a volunteer. She puts her heart and soul in doing something- the protection and promotion of Tai O's beauty and enviroment. I do not know if I will ever find something that I am so passionate about and if I do, will I do as much as her.

There was a boat trip that brought us to the open sea where the show us some sights of Tai O that we will not be able to see on foot. The best thing about this were the dolphins we saw!!! There were quite a number of dolphins and some were pink! I know that Sentosa has pink dolphins too but its so different seeing them in the open sea, where they are free! There was a particular dolphin that was quite a show-off! It was doing some stunts for us. After seeing the dolphins, the boat took us to the rivers in Tai O, however, I must admit that I fell asleep during this part... think it was because I was so tired, nice breeze and the slow rocking motion of the boat.

Finally, the trip came to an end when its time to take a ferry back. The ferry took us to Tung Chung where we have to take the MTR back. It was a long ride and we had to change twice. Rubee and me were famished by the time we got to Kowloon Tong!!! Had MacDonald and durians.

When I got back, I was very sleepy yet I managed to finish 'The Alchemist". Another quote from the book that I find interesting is "Everything that happens once will never happen again. But everything that happens twice will surely happen a third time" I wonder if this is true but I was too tired to think into it.

What a tiring day.. I slept for 12 hrs.

Sunday (04/09/2005)

Actually I wanted to stay-in today but was persuaded by Rubee to go to Causeway Bay with them. I went shopping again and bought more things! I had no choice but to use my credit card has I didn't have enought cash. Now hope my parents will not flip when they see the bill. But I am planning not to spend too much from now on as I have yet to pay my hostel fees and going to ShenZhen this coming weekend.. so going to scrimp this week!

Oh yah.. I did something charitable today! There were selling mooncakes to raise funds for the education of under-privilege kids and I bought on so that I can take picture with Wu Fung. He signed on my box for me too! okies.. I know that he is no Andy Lau or Edison Chen but I have been watching his shows since young so its nice meeting him in person.

Rubee bought a mooncake too from Alan Tam!!!! Although he looks kind of different in person though. He is very nice and chatted with us for a while but mainly in Cantonese. Took a picture with him too

I have put on sooooooo much weight in HK tat I feel like a Bo Luo Bao!!! Time to go running soon....

Think should stop blogging so late at nite... so sleepy that I am rattling nonsense..

Anyway I think I am a boring blogger..... heee...

Time flies!
Soo fast.. its already Friday!!! Been here for a week and is settling in rather well. Yesterday my room mate finally came!! Her name is Daisy and she is from U.K. She is very easy to talk to and a rather nice gal. However, guess the first impression I gave her was rather memorable. My clothes weren't totally dried thus I put them all over her empty bed and table.... thus the sight that greeted her was my shirts and undies.. my gosh!!! But thankfully she is cool about it, and moreover I left a note stating why my clothes are all over so she was very understanding!! Luckily, I left a note....

mmm.. a quick recap on what I did..

Wednesday:
There was a lunch reception for the exchange students hosted by the Faculty of Business. Gotten to know some students from Austria and this other guy from Netherlands. He is very tall!!! He is standing at 198cm. Think he is the tallest person around.. but I feel sorry for him at times as the first thing people do comment about him is always his height. Guess that he is sick of it.. just like how skinny people are tired of constantly being told that they are thin.

After the lunch, we headed down to Lan Kwai Fong as Rubee wants to look for her friend, Sui Bann, who works at XTC Gelato. Actually, do not know if thats how his name is spelled. He used to study in Singapore and is currently studying law at the University of Hong Kong. He allowed us taste the different gelatos! The highlight was when there was this young American girl who came to buy ice-cream with her mother and she was very adorable! The other girls are goo goo gaa gaaing over her and we even took a picture with her but cannot post it up yet as its in someone else's camera. I feel that Lan Kwai Fong is so rather nice and peaceful during the day, guess that it will be very different at nite. It is a rather nice place to do people-watching, guess I can sit there whole day and soak in the sounds and sight.

a pict of us goofing around

As usual, more shopping!!! Cannot remember what I bought though.. except that I went to the supermart and gotten some grocery. Oh yah.. gotten a kettle as it is sooo trouble to go to the common room to get water and I can save money as I do not have to buy mineral water all the time. However, think that I may socialise less with others because of it as I no longer need to go to the common room anymore. Guess when one grows older... one gets lazier to mix around.. or is it only me???

We took the tram and its very cheap! Only Hk$2 regardless of distance and the tram stations are located in the middle of road.

My family informed me that PWC sent me an offer letter... YEAH!!!! Solved a future problem... don't have to go job-hunting! Although life as an auditor do have many negative points such as long working hours but its really a good chance to learn. Nevermind, just slog it out when I am still young. Anyway, I have a choice between assurance and tax... n my choice is audit of cos!!! Quite like audit work... n what made them think I am good at tax.. wahaha. Since I enjoyed my stint at PWC, I do look forward to working there in the future.

Thursday:
Was planning to slack my afternoon away but guess that doing laundry wasn't a very easy task, especially when I am not familiar with the machines! I did not realised that the dryer will take sooo long to dry the clothes thus I did not prepare enough coins.. hence explaining my damp clothes. Couldn't leave my clothes on the clothes line for long too as I did not have any clothes pegs so was so afraid that my clothes will just fly away. If it really do fly away... guess its almost impossible to find it as my laudry room is located on the roof.. that is 18 floors high and at the fringe of the hostel... who knows where will it float to. Had a little disaster... I was taking a chance that my new towel will don't give off those little furry stuff when being washed.. n apparently it does! Now I have gotten lint on all my clothes.. arrgh... hopefully no one looks closely!

Got to know another exchange student, and he is very talkative.. loan him my pail as he needs to blench his clothes because they are now all pink as he didnt realise he has a red shirt that runs.. just hope he remembers to return me my pail!

Went for Cantonese corner and enjoyed myself though I did not manage to socialise much with the other foreign students as they seem to know each other very well so hard to penetrate at times. Sheena invited a girl from her Cantonese class to join us for dinner and a trip to Tai Zi. Her name is Ziwei and is from Malaysia. She is nice but tooo quiet!!!! Oh no.. forgot to take her contact no!!! Hope to see her around. Anway Hua Liao Jie is a rather good place to shop but we went tooo late.. the shops there close rather early. Sheena and me each bought a pair of shoe. Its actually the same pair just that in different color... HK$55 only!

It's actually a little more pinkish...

Oh yah, my room mate came!!!

Sadly, I have not managed to finish "The Alchemis"t as I do not have the time to sit down to read but came across something very interesting in the book. The main character known as 'the boy' asked the alchemist why should he always follow what his heart tells him and the alchemist reply was "Because you will never be able to keep it quiet. Even if you pretend not to have heard what it tells you, it will always be there inside you, repeating to you what you are thinking about life and about the world."

The alchemist added "you will never be able to escape from your heart. So it's better to listen to what it has to say. That way, you'll never have to fear an unanticipated blow."

After reading that I thought about myself and how often do I heed what my heart tells me. I totally agree with the part where one will never be able to silence our heart and use logic to make decisions. Many will think that I am a logical person who makes decisions based on my mind and not heart... well its time for me to tell u.. ITS NOT TRUE!!! I have to admit that I am very realistic but that does not mean that I do not hear the little messages and warning signs that my heart is trying to tell me because I know that those messages indicates what I hope and yearn for so if I do not pay attention to those messages and think through carefully, I will live to regret. Moreover, I totally believe in intuition, so I do follow my gut feel and its mostly right!!!

Friday:

Finally settled my courses, in fact I have more choices than expected so now only waiting for SMU to approve my courses... quick!!! I want to settle my final schedule!

There was an welcome session for all non-local exchange students and I got to know more people. There was a girl who was at NUS for exchange last term and she is very helpful. Rather nice to talk to, so I promise to add her to my msn. I sat between a girl from Shanghai and another from UK. Both were very nice to talk to, and we agreed to have little gathering like BBQ in the future.

From left: Janice, Amanda, me and Sophia

Anyway, Sophia's bro is planning to go Singapore to work as a head chef.

There is a little neighbourhood behind our school and the things there are so much cheaper. Think will just go there to get the things that we need. My cantonese sux but I was actually able to help some Mainland students with their purchase as they do not understand the shopkeeper at all.. feel soo proud of myself!!! Hopefully I can hold a proper conversation in Cantones before I leave... errr... hopefully only!!!

Headed down to Shatin for dinner with Edison and Sheena. We ate at this place where the seats are actually swings! If you are wondering...Shatin is also where the Registry of Marriage of HK is located! Think after this trip, the 3 of us will be very good friends... just like jie meis! okies think if Eddy reads this, he will scream!

Got a very sweet HK girl to take a picture for us.

Soo tired... time for bed!! Still have a City Tour tomorrow! Going to Lantau Island to visit Tai O and some temples...

*yawnz* where is my room mate... she is not back yet.. hope she is fine.
