exasperation
I really have to write about this.

Never in my 4 years of higher education I am soooo exasperated during a presentation rehearsal. Never ever.

I was sooo close to snapping at my group mates.

First, a declaration, the following doesn't refer to all HK students, just some that we met. There are some that are very nice, but like all society there are black sheeps, just that some are blackier than others.

We met at 230pm, class is at 330pm. Okies, 1 hr, plenty of time to run through the slides together, even though no one has seen the final slides yet except for the gal (named K for this purpose) compiling it. So we walked towards the direction of our usual classroom, 1 gal (ms B)just realised that we have to print a copy for the prof. So she went to print but as our dear Miss K saved the slides on her USB drive so she had to email Ms B to print, later she decided to pass the entire drive to Ms B.

So the rest of us, (Ms P1 n Ms P2) and myself headed to look for a classroom. My gosh, this school has soo many classes going on at the same time, why didnt' someone booked a venue. I suggested it but the excuse given was its exam time so cannot book... oh fine.. that sounds reasonable rite? So we went looking... n looking.. n looking.. n finally I noticed a classroom with only 1 guy so we approached him and asked if we could share. Finally gotten ourselves a venue. This is when Mr L finally arrived, yes yes.... he has successfully managed to get himself on my billboard of 'favourite' group mates.

Later, Ms B said that she has problem opening up the file, so what can we do, cut and paste from all the slides and come up with a NEW group slides. My slides when up first cos the email i sent was 1st, I took the opportunity to correct a spelling mistake, then Mr L said "aiyah use spell check la" ... i was soo close to knocking his head.. of cos i used spell check thats how i noticed that I had a mistake in my original slides. This also goes to show that Ms K did a lousy job compiling, doesnt she even check for spelling and grammar?

Finally, came out with some thing and this was when Ms P1 realised that her slides were not in. My gosh of cos la.. u sent in your sldies at almost midnite last nite and when was the dateline supposed to be? Sunday afternoon at 12 or is it 3? doesn't matter. Being late for a day is still acceptable by my standards but not at the eve of the presentation.

I kept telling them that the background was too dark, black fonts will not be obvious.. n initially, they thought i do not like the background. Hey its one of my fav powerpt background but the contrast was not obvious.. who can see your words under the light. Finally, they changed the color of the words and to an awful shade of green. I can't be bothered by then. Let them waste all the time changing the color of the words... there's soo many to change. By this time its already 315pm. Why do not just change the color schema of the slides. Do they know that powerpoint has that ability?

Then Ms B appeared with the USB and it was then i realised that she has been trying to open the wrong file all the time. okies, at least she was doing something, running around trying to get the slides printed. Finally, can open the original file.

I saw the original slides and i almost fainted. Ms K really just cut and pasted with no editing become the initial background she chose has a line across the heading and you know what.. it cuts right through my text box for 1 slide.

Oh whatever, its time for class.. so Ms B rushed off to print, and when she came back, she didnt chose black n white thus the whole slides is basically shades of grey... no correction.. tones of black. I dont even want to talk about the slides layout on the handout *pound chest*

Finally, its our turn to present. We were the 2nd group. Missed part of the 1st group's presentation.

There are 6 of us and the 4 other gals squeezed into this small area of 3.5m by 0.5m, its an elevated platform for the lecturer, so obviously Mr L n me cannot go in anymore. I decided to sit down at the front seat as I do not want to block those by the sides from seeing the slides and do not want to look like a silly block. Moreover, isnt that what we were taught about presentation skills? Do not crowd together and those not presenting can just sit aside.

Mr L actually stared at me as if trying to question y am i sitting. Arrgh...

When I am done presenting, I went back to sit. See no point in standing and he stared at me again.

I really cannot be bothered anymore. The 3rd group presented and my group decided to leave after tat. I was like "what?!" It seems so rude, but i have no choice.. no point in me staying cos everyone except ME presented in Cantonese. It was a pure waste of my time to stay on because me sitting at the corner was totally blocked by the next group (who was even worse! the entire group stood on the right side of the screen like some impregnable fortress) and i understood nothing, zero, go-song, zilch!!! Cannot even see the chinese words. After that this other gal from the class told me that the prof is very xiao qi... easily offended... mmm.. willl he deduct marks from us cos we didnt stay throughout? Well, i dont think we have much marks to start with.

Took a group picture but think better not published it here.. dun want to break their achy breaky heart.

Actually, I can totally undestand their lack of presentation/group project skills. 2 are yr 1s, Mr L is in achitecture, Ms P1 is in her 4th year but this is only her 3rd group project.. don't know abt Ms B.

I am no professed expert but come on, i think till date I've done more than 30 presentations and grp work should have taken command from the start.... oh but y i can't cos of people like Mr L who thinks he knows it all. Rujin was so surpised that my group mates are all local cos its always the exchange students that screw up. Maybe I can get the school the pay me to teach the students a thing or 2 about presentation. wahaha...evil thoughts are brewing in my mind now.

Apparently, I am not the only 1 with horrible stories to tell about HK grp mates. My roomie gave me an explanation which we all agreed. HK students are just too competitive. They will stab you in the back if its to their own benefit. They do not share. Hey this is coming from a local student!!!

Debbie and my prof said the same thing about Hk students, they lived too much in their own world, no sense of team effort, see no need to learn from others. Its okies, so glad that its all going to be over.

Okies, going to start mugging for my psycho test. Its 60%! Never had 1 quiz so high percentage one.... wahahaa....

I'm going kuku... can someone just allow me to spend some $ to make myself feel better?

Banning of coke
Among all the things I heard about Singapore on this exchange, there is one that stands out among the rest and that is....

Singapore bans coke. Those underaged are not allowed to drink coke, something that has to do with their diet.

Initially when i heard it, I just laughed it off, thinking that its some misconception but yesterday my physiotherapist asked how is it like to have no freedom. I was like "what do you define as freedom?" I thought he was going to talk about politics but I was so wrong, he was talking about food! He told me that the coke thingy was reported by the press.

Can someone clarify this to the press? We are getting such a bad reputation.

Cathy
Its 3.30am and I'm trying very hard to be productive, but sadly, things do not always go my way.

The more I think about it, the more pissed I get. Its about a gal, a rude, inconsiderate gal

The gal is my toilet mate, her name is Cathy I think.

How come I do not know whats her name? Cos she is sooo 'high' up that when we say hi, she dont bother to look at us at all. Initially, she was fine, stilll manage to have a few words with her but as time goes by... she is in the high and mighty world of her own. At times when we smiled at her, she just walked on.

She was complaining to her friend very loudly in Cantonese that she used to put toilet paper in the toilet and people has been using and do not bother to replace it when it's finished. Then her friend told her to not speak so loud and she said that she purposely want the next door people (which is my roomie n I) to hear. My gosh.. it was like 2.30am

Whats her problem, I've not even complained abt her and she dare say such things.

WE DIDN'T USE HER PRECIOUS PAPER... okies mayb I used like once or twice cos emergency but frankly its not as if i finished her entire roll. The most like 1/100 of the roll. If u put your toliet paper there u cannot expect others not to use rite. If you want them replaced, then say so. Say infront of us.. not behind our back.

My roomie was even more puzzled, she was like, "was there ever a roll?"

I must say that Cathy ain that smart cos if my roomie wasn't around, esp since its sunday and she usually just comes in on Mon morning, she is basically wasting her breathe cos I've frankly no idea what she was blabbering about. I understood only like 1/10 of the conversation, not enough for me to make any sense, so even if she is cursing and swearing at me, I will have no idea.

I haven't even complained about her yet. There are 4 clothes bars in the toilet and she (Cathy) occupied like 2 of them, which means either my roomie or me doesn't have place to put our towel. Her toiletries are aplenty thus taking up most of the shelf to put tolietries in the shower.

Oh yah, she still bitched loudly that her room stinks.

Should I be mean and complain to the security guard that her friend, who doesn't belong to the hall is staying over. No visitors after 12 rite.

Pity her roomie man.... I like her roomie, she is a nice Shanghainese gal.

Okies, Edison I know that u r going to tell me to be nice and let her slap me on my other cheek but how!

I just thought of a good xmas pressie for Cathy. I am going to give her toilet rolls... not 1 but 2! Going to write a note that says "Hope this makes u happier, less delusional, more considerate and most importantly, Smile"

hey my toilet rolls are pretty good.. 3 plys. Mmm.. mayb should get my roomie to donate 1 too... hers is Scotts, have flower prints too.

As promised.. Yunna pictures and going to tell you all what I did! Do not know why some of the photo links are gone.

Day 1 (16/11/05)
Supposed to meet Sheena at 530am downstairs and she was late! Anyway, we made our way to Luo Hu but have not idea if there is a bus to Shenzhen airport so have to take a cab instead. Guess its too early so none of us really bothered to bargain, paid 150 yuan instead. It was as what Lonely planet suggested between 130-150. Anyway, checked in, shared a bowl of instant noodles and finally ready to board the plane.

I knocked out on the plane and was so soundly asleep that I didn't bother to eat the breakfast served (lousy food u see). Then after 2.5hrs finally we are in Lijiang! Took a mini bus to the city and when we get off, tons of people (mainly women) approached us to offer cab services, guesthouse etc etc. We decided to stay at this guesthouse ran by a Naxi family.

Y50 (do not even need to bargain) for a double room with attached bathroom, pretty good deal just that the place is little shabby but then it has a rustic charm. Best thing about the room is that it has a heater bed.. Sheena was soo happy about it. This is where we stayed.

Finally, ready to explore the 'Old City' of Lijiang.

The Naxi Orchestra is a traditonal Taoist temple music thats favored by Emperors of the past. Most of the members of this troope is above the age of 80 and there is no need for a conductor. The leader of the group is a man by the name of Xuan Ke and like what Lonely Planet described, he talks too much, so much so that whenever he spoke, i'll fall asleep, wasting the expensive ticket. However, its interesting to note that he was jailed for 21 years because in 1949, to welcome the Red Army, he played Schubert's Marche Militaire, thus being jailed for his devotion to Western culture.

Day 2:

Together with another couple, we made our way to the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The day before, as Lijiang was rather cold, Sheena and me gotten ourselves each a thicker jacket. A pretty good deal I guess... make a guess how much was it. Anyway, on this day trip we met 2 different group of guys. The 1st group was 4 guys and their pretty tour guide, seeing just the 2 of us, they asked if we wanted to join them on the ascend of the mountain, but we decided to give the peak a miss as it was just toooo windy. Anyway, the one that tourists visit is the is just 1 of the many peaks, no one has yet to conquer the highest peak. The other group was when we were in this incredibly long queue for the cable car that goes down the mountain. They are from Guangxi and is very excited when they heard that we are from Singapore. Anyway, the cabbie advised us to buy eggs to eat up there as the food is expensive but I didn't eat my egg till afterwe came down n as compared to the price we paid to go go up.. the food is relatively cheap.

We were supposed to join the couple shared the ride with us to the mountain for drinks, but the both of us were so tired that our nap became a 12-hr affair.

Day 3: Off to Dali
With our backpacks we had to walk to the bank before hailing a taxi to bring us to the bus station. Everything was fine just that the seats we a little cramp but as usual, we slept during the journey.. Surpised that we can still sleep after the 12 hours sleep we had the nite b4? well.. don't cos there is nothing we can do but sleep.

After reaching Dali's old city, we were approached once again by tons of people that offering lodging, transport etc etc. Decided on a horse carriage to bring us into the city and he introduced his friend's guesthouse to us. The owner quoted us Y50 but as the horseman told us Y40, the owner was presuaded by his friend to charge us Y40. Its cheaper, cleaner, and nicer than the one we stayed in Lijiang but the only sad thing was that there's no heater for our beds or the room. We also arranged to hire another of his friend's car for the day to bring us to places. One thing good about such places is that they have lots of guesthouses owned and run by families. Its often safe to stay and is a cheap option too, however, this is not the same for cities. So the rule is... in cities stay hotel, in rural areas, stay guesthouse. Moreover, as they have their sources for anything and anywhere you want to go so it makes the travellers' life easier. Thus on this day we went to 3 places of interest. First, a traditional Bai style house where there's a performance, introduction of tea, dressing, art etc etc. Entrance fees is Y50 each. Ohh before that, the guides (driver and horseman) took us to eat a very traditional lunch, common throughout Yunnan- Mian Xian and Mee Xian. Cheap and good cos its only Y2 each bowl, and its spicy!!!

After that, we went to this Tian Long Tong. For fans of the drama serial, Tian Long Ba Bu, this is where the Shen Xian Jie Jie lives. The entrance fees is Y68 each. It consists of a cable car ride up the cave, a personal guide, a long hike through the mountain and down it, a walk to see Sangguan Hua- a flower that's so hard to cultivate, and then tea-tasting. After the tea, it was too late, so the guides brought us to a mini tie dye factory which is actually the house of a Bai family. This method of tie-dye is a traditional of the Bai people. In the past, the cloth are mainly just blue and white but now there are other colors too. Sheena bought a skirt and I bought a pants. Wanted this cloth so much but I've no idea where to display it hence decided on the pants instead.

Day 4:
After settling out sleeper train tix to Kunming, the guides brought us to take this boat ride to some island. Its the most wasteful thing we did on the trip- waste time, waste $. Y100 each and we can only stay on the island for like less than an hr. I do not even remember the name of the Island, just that it has a big statue of the Goddess of Mercy and lots of Mainland tourists. The weather in Dali is much warmer and comfortable as compared to Lijiang. Plentiful sunlight but it was very much welcomed by Sheena and me, so much so that Sheena often voluntarily stands in the sun w/o a brella. After the boat trip, we took a picture outside the 3 Pagodas of Dali, as the guide was telling us that no point going in as its expensive and boring.

Next activity- horse riding up Cang Shan. Its no joke okies... up and down is about 15km and almost 3 hours. Sheena's horse is much younger (4 yrs old), full of energy and descends quickly, gave her a big shock. It loves to fart too hence me and my poor horsey has to suffer as we were behind her. My horse is sooo lazy, hates to walk faster and love to eat, however he is a very exprience horse thus led the way down. He know that when there's alot of stones on the fall, he will kick some away b4 walking. However, he took me bashing through some tree branches as he likes to take the difficult path at times, such as going up and down a slope instead of the flat path next to it. After reaching the top, there is a temple known as ZhongHe temple and a few waterfalls. As it was too late, we only managed to go the small waterfall.

The horse-ride is certainly a highlight of the entire trip, it was so fun although we did end up with aches and bruises. Oh yah, we went to a Jade Shop as the driver gets to earn Y10 for every group of customer he brings there, and the manager of the shop keeps talking to us. We bluffed him that we are from Johore instead and in the end, he charged Sheena Y100 for a jade bracelet thats supposed to be Y300.
Dinner was western food and it was soo unsatisfying that i was sulking after that. We met this huge group of people at the cafe too, seems like the ya ya papaya kind and from their conversation, I figured out that they should be actors and crew members.
After that, we headed for Xiagan train station to catch our sleeper train to Kunming. Think Sheena is traumatised by the train cos of some people we met. I was fine with the train though i must admit that its not the best place to sleep. Have to be careful too. The people that shared the cabin with us are from Beijing and from their jacket, we figured out that they are police. Understands English but speaking it is a different thing.
Day 5
Arrived at Kunming at 630am but by 5am, there's people getting ready, long queues at the basin and toilets. Relatively clean.
Got a taxi to Camilia Hotel and stayed at the Youth Side, cheaper but still expensive! Y120. Oh.. I nosebled the min i got into the room. think cos the weather is too dry and nose too blocked. As sheena didn't get a wink at all on the train, we decided to take a nap before goin to Shilin, the famous stone forest but u know what......... our nap toook toooo long! hahahaha
Did nothing much but walked around Kunming city. Quite like most cities just that the things are very expensive. Full of flowers in bloom too. We went to Carrefour and bought some stuff, but Sheena was the happiest with her buy.. Jay Chou's latest album at a third of the price in HK.

Day 6 Time to go home
Its our final day and deciding that we should not jus come Kunming n not do anything we decided to go Green Lake Park. Nothing there but birds and ducks! So we left early and we to get our hair washed because our hotel had a little crisis that morning, we gotten some treatment done too but decided not to publish those picts as we look like mushrooms+strawberry shortcakes. The pipe for the hot water wasn't working. THUs we couldn't bathe and wasnt in time for the freee breakfast. The hotel staff gave us a simple breakfast to make up for it.. but it was so simple. Anyway, took the hotel shuttle to the airport and gotten a back massage. The price was Y40 for 30mins but we bargained and got it at Y30 for 30 mins. Later from Shenzhen airport, we managed to find a mini bus that goes Luo Hu, Y20 per person.. yahoo!!!!! can save $. Met an Indian dude on the bus and his mandarin was like... wow!

Okie that's the gist of what we did for 6 days. This is going to be a looooooonggg entry. I've gotta fly!!! time for physio. =)
