| exasperation |
I really have to write about this.
Never in my 4 years of higher education I am soooo exasperated during a presentation rehearsal. Never ever.
I was sooo close to snapping at my group mates.
First, a declaration, the following doesn't refer to all HK students, just some that we met. There are some that are very nice, but like all society there are black sheeps, just that some are blackier than others.
We met at 230pm, class is at 330pm. Okies, 1 hr, plenty of time to run through the slides together, even though no one has seen the final slides yet except for the gal (named K for this purpose) compiling it. So we walked towards the direction of our usual classroom, 1 gal (ms B)just realised that we have to print a copy for the prof. So she went to print but as our dear Miss K saved the slides on her USB drive so she had to email Ms B to print, later she decided to pass the entire drive to Ms B.
So the rest of us, (Ms P1 n Ms P2) and myself headed to look for a classroom. My gosh, this school has soo many classes going on at the same time, why didnt' someone booked a venue. I suggested it but the excuse given was its exam time so cannot book... oh fine.. that sounds reasonable rite? So we went looking... n looking.. n looking.. n finally I noticed a classroom with only 1 guy so we approached him and asked if we could share. Finally gotten ourselves a venue. This is when Mr L finally arrived, yes yes.... he has successfully managed to get himself on my billboard of 'favourite' group mates.
Later, Ms B said that she has problem opening up the file, so what can we do, cut and paste from all the slides and come up with a NEW group slides. My slides when up first cos the email i sent was 1st, I took the opportunity to correct a spelling mistake, then Mr L said "aiyah use spell check la" ... i was soo close to knocking his head.. of cos i used spell check thats how i noticed that I had a mistake in my original slides. This also goes to show that Ms K did a lousy job compiling, doesnt she even check for spelling and grammar?
Finally, came out with some thing and this was when Ms P1 realised that her slides were not in. My gosh of cos la.. u sent in your sldies at almost midnite last nite and when was the dateline supposed to be? Sunday afternoon at 12 or is it 3? doesn't matter. Being late for a day is still acceptable by my standards but not at the eve of the presentation.
I kept telling them that the background was too dark, black fonts will not be obvious.. n initially, they thought i do not like the background. Hey its one of my fav powerpt background but the contrast was not obvious.. who can see your words under the light. Finally, they changed the color of the words and to an awful shade of green. I can't be bothered by then. Let them waste all the time changing the color of the words... there's soo many to change. By this time its already 315pm. Why do not just change the color schema of the slides. Do they know that powerpoint has that ability?
Then Ms B appeared with the USB and it was then i realised that she has been trying to open the wrong file all the time. okies, at least she was doing something, running around trying to get the slides printed. Finally, can open the original file.
I saw the original slides and i almost fainted. Ms K really just cut and pasted with no editing become the initial background she chose has a line across the heading and you know what.. it cuts right through my text box for 1 slide.
Oh whatever, its time for class.. so Ms B rushed off to print, and when she came back, she didnt chose black n white thus the whole slides is basically shades of grey... no correction.. tones of black. I dont even want to talk about the slides layout on the handout *pound chest*
Finally, its our turn to present. We were the 2nd group. Missed part of the 1st group's presentation.
There are 6 of us and the 4 other gals squeezed into this small area of 3.5m by 0.5m, its an elevated platform for the lecturer, so obviously Mr L n me cannot go in anymore. I decided to sit down at the front seat as I do not want to block those by the sides from seeing the slides and do not want to look like a silly block. Moreover, isnt that what we were taught about presentation skills? Do not crowd together and those not presenting can just sit aside.
Mr L actually stared at me as if trying to question y am i sitting. Arrgh...
When I am done presenting, I went back to sit. See no point in standing and he stared at me again.
I really cannot be bothered anymore. The 3rd group presented and my group decided to leave after tat. I was like "what?!" It seems so rude, but i have no choice.. no point in me staying cos everyone except ME presented in Cantonese. It was a pure waste of my time to stay on because me sitting at the corner was totally blocked by the next group (who was even worse! the entire group stood on the right side of the screen like some impregnable fortress) and i understood nothing, zero, go-song, zilch!!! Cannot even see the chinese words. After that this other gal from the class told me that the prof is very xiao qi... easily offended... mmm.. willl he deduct marks from us cos we didnt stay throughout? Well, i dont think we have much marks to start with.
Took a group picture but think better not published it here.. dun want to break their achy breaky heart.
Actually, I can totally undestand their lack of presentation/group project skills. 2 are yr 1s, Mr L is in achitecture, Ms P1 is in her 4th year but this is only her 3rd group project.. don't know abt Ms B.
I am no professed expert but come on, i think till date I've done more than 30 presentations and grp work should have taken command from the start.... oh but y i can't cos of people like Mr L who thinks he knows it all. Rujin was so surpised that my group mates are all local cos its always the exchange students that screw up. Maybe I can get the school the pay me to teach the students a thing or 2 about presentation. wahaha...evil thoughts are brewing in my mind now.
Apparently, I am not the only 1 with horrible stories to tell about HK grp mates. My roomie gave me an explanation which we all agreed. HK students are just too competitive. They will stab you in the back if its to their own benefit. They do not share. Hey this is coming from a local student!!!
Debbie and my prof said the same thing about Hk students, they lived too much in their own world, no sense of team effort, see no need to learn from others. Its okies, so glad that its all going to be over.
Okies, going to start mugging for my psycho test. Its 60%! Never had 1 quiz so high percentage one.... wahahaa....
I'm going kuku... can someone just allow me to spend some $ to make myself feel better? |
